At a special meeting held in Wollongong tonight, agreement was reached between Corrimal and Port Kembla clubs and Surf Life Saving NSW to get the clubs back patrolling their local beaches.
SLSNSW has agreed to trial a call-out volunteer life saver system during the first year of the clubs’ current three-year life saving agreements, and to implement this system in the second and third years of the agreement. A review of the system will be conducted at the beginning of February each season and the outcome of that review will determine whether the system will proceed without change, proceed with changes or not proceed.
The clubs have agreed to undertake Saturday patrols during the first year of the agreement while simultaneously testing the call-out system, to be co-developed by a team with representation from Corrimal, Port Kembla, Surf Life Saving Illawarra, Surf Life Saving NSW and Wollongong City Council.
This arrangement has been deemed satisfactory to all stakeholders, and the clubs will return signed agreements. As a result, Corrimal and Port Kembla surf clubs will be reinstated with no loss of service or entitlements.
The clubs express their appreciation to SLSNSW for coming back to the table to find a way to resolve what had been a very distressing and difficult impasse.
