Corrimal and Port Kembla surf life saving clubs were de-registered on Friday following one week into the new volunteer season. In a media statement released by SLSNSW, both clubs’ affiliations will be discontinued.
This follows the clubs’ strong opposition to mandatory volunteers on Saturdays, when Wollongong City Council lifeguards are already on paid patrol.
On Sunday, members from both clubs discussed methods to continue community involvement and beach sustainability. At Corrimal SLSC alone, more than 200 nippers are said to be affected by de-registration while sand dunes are being swallowed by weeds and continue to erode.
“We still intend on maintaining a presence at our club and we’re investigating all of those opportunities. We’re keenly interested in seeing the dunes improve”, said Corrimal SLSC President Tony Cartwright. “Surf Life Saving, please re-engage with us…we really want to resolve this matter.”
